3Washable? Laughable!Apr 19, 2007
By Value Mommy
Most of the art supplies I have bought in the past were Crayola, so I'm used to the claim of washability being true. Not so with the Melissa & Doug stamp sets. I broke out a few of the sets as a rainy day surprise this morning for my kids. Because of the claim of washability, I didn't bother to set out a cover on their play table. When the kids were finished playing, their little hands and the table were covered in ink. No biggie. I helped them put their stamps away and then grabbed some wipes to clean their table. That knocked some of it out but not all. Even with a kitchen cleaning spray and then (UGH) bleach water, I could not get all the color off the table. The final straw was when my kids got out of the bathtub this morning (rainy day activity #2, playing sea monsters in the tub) and were still covered in the ink. Obviously, I'm not happy. The stamps are OK (we did get too many square edges included in the image for my taste but my kids didn't care).

I just wanted to warn parents to cover the work space if they decide to purchase this item. I'll do the same until this product runs out and then I'll look for some washable ink that really is washable. The kids did enjoy it so I do think it's a good gift idea. The same could be accomplished by purchasing some individual stamps/ink pads/colored pencils and assembling in a basket yourself. The price on this item is right though. Just beware the stains!

5A Must HaveApr 19, 2006

I ordered this stamp set for my 3 year old. I was concerned when I was ordering it that it might not be up to the job of withstanding a 3 year old, due to the low price. When we recieved it, we tore it open to find the box was made of sturdy wood, as well as all the stamps. And yes, the ink really is washable! You just put the stamp under warm water and the ink just rinses away. It comes out of clothing, walls and just about anywhere else toddlers may think to put it. And the rubber stampers that are attached to the wooden blocks are very clear when stamped. There are no broken lines or unwanted blotches. I recently went to a local craft store looking for more stamps and found the prices to be overly rediculous. This kit is definately worth more than I paid. My son asks to play "dino stamps" all the time, and I don't mind pulling it out for him, because it really is washable. The colored pencils are wonderful, as the ink dries fairly quickly, so you can use them to color in the stamped outline. I most definately recommend this to anyone!

2Be warned - ink is permanent! Not washable!Jan 16, 2010

The stamps themselves are great and really durable with wonderful detail. We were really happy to find the names of the types of dinosaurs on the sides of the box. It's also really nice that the colored pencils are already sharpened and ready for use. A minor complaint is that they didn't include a brown colored pencil though, as that is the one color we felt was most needed for coloring volcanos and dinosaurs. Another minor complaint is that the ink provided is red and blue... not exactly the earthy tones that you would want your dinosaurs to be. A major complaint, however, is that the ink box boasts that it is washable, but it is definitely NOT! My son was wearing one of his favorite shirts while stamping and got a lot of ink rubbed onto his shirt while working... I wasn't concerned about it, as the ink box claims it's washable. However, after three washings, and other treatments, the ink hadn't faded one bit, and I finally had to just throw his shirt away. The ink also wouldn't wash off his hands. It's a total lie that the ink pad is washable - be warned, throw the ink away, and buy ones that truly are washable, and perhaps also in earthy colors that are more suitable for dinosaurs too... Then you'll be able to enjoy these stamps.

5Fun by Messy!Jul 23, 2007

My son has had the Dinosaur Stamp Set for a little over 2-years now, and it's been well used. The box has a label on the outside, which indicates each dinosaur, and has really come in handy for me, as I know very little about the Mesozoic Era. The only shortcoming I've experienced with the Dinosaur Stamp Set is the worthless pencils. The pigment is so hard it doesn't work. I tossed them in the trash after our first play session, and replaced them with our Crayola pencils.

The stamps are nice and chunky for little hands. My son is delayed in fine motor skills, but has no trouble picking these up, and using them. He creates a landscape of plants, mountains, and rocks with markers, and then stamps, stamps, stamps. He actually prefers to color the stamps in with markers, but every now and then I notice he uses the pencils. The Dinosaur Stamp Set makes for a fun, creative time. This can be a messy activity though, so if you're not into using Spray `n Wash on your kids clothes, or spraying 409 on the table after play, you may want to avoid this toy.

4Long-lasting funAug 08, 2009

These stamps suit various different ages & have suprising longevity : When your child is small (3+) they just enjoy stamping them randomly (make sure you put newspaper down!). But as they grow up they are more careful & eventually can go on to make cards for birthdays etc or decorate bedrooms (under supervision)etc. Not a toy they're going to play with everyday but once in a while on a rainy afternoon. Also very easy to hand down to siblings.
