 Try it under a light...Feb 16, 2012

I was having a similiar problem, with the sound puzzle, in that it did not work every time. I called the Melissa & Doug company wondering if our product was defective. I learned that the puzzle works utilizing lights and shadows, that is exposing the base of the puzzle to light by removing the puzzle piece from it, then covering the opening back up with the correct piece allows the sound to be made. It was suggested to me to try our puzzle under a lamp, allowing enough light to make the appropriate shadow, to determine if our puzzle was defective and to my surprise all the pieces made an appropriate sound.

I bought one for my son and my cousin.
Its a great toy, the sounds are loud and clear.
The pieces are easy to place in and pull out, they dont stick and they are easy for little fingers to grab.
My son has drooled all over his and it still works and hasnt peeled or chipped yet.
The only flaw in it is that the pieces work for any spot. The dog can make the horse part neigh and vice versa, but I would definately buy this toy again and recommend it.

I am disapointed in this puzzle. I was very excited for my toddler to use this puzzle to learn sounds of the animals by looking at the pitures but half the time the sounds don't work when you put the puzzle piece in its spot and other times you will put a piece in and it will play an incorrect sound.
I will not be buying any more Melissa and Doug sound puzzles.

What a disappointment! Only 2 of the 8 animals make sounds (and they only work sometimes). My 2 year old keeps pressing on the puzzle pieces to try to make them work. It is so sad. I love Melissa & Doug products but this one is not up to their standards. Don't buy this toy!

I bought this puzzle for my little girl who loves these type puzzles and is really getting in to the animal sounds(she's not quite 2). The sounds do NOT sound like the animal that they are intended to sound like and are especially annoying. Not only are they annoying, but it goes off ALL the time. Especially when you turn a light on and off. Very sensitive and after posting that this toy "woke my baby up from a nap" on Facebook, about 10 other Moms commented that theirs does the same thing! Not to mention that all of these women also found this toy extremely annoying.
Don't buy and if you get as a gift, regift. That's my suggestion ;)
